I was shocked when I read through this week’s reading material because I never knew that using TURNITIN was infringing on someone’s copyright. I have used this platform for plagiarism checking before, and I’m sorry, I’m really sorry. Based on Luke’s article That’s No Plagiarism Checker, I am deeply aware of the seriousness of being spied on by social platforms. He mentioned in the article that because the plagiarism checker not only “rejects” but also provides “feedback,” controversial ideas are automatically filtered out by the system (Luke, 2019). I understand that if people rely on such platforms or “big data,” different voices will be filtered out, controversial ideas will be automatically deleted, and new voices will be drowned out.

At first, I still didn’t understand how a plagiarism checker like TURNITIN could violate copyright. However, my friend told me with the most straightforward reason, “We have to pay for the books and academic articles we read, which is respectful of the author and the copyright. TURNITIN wants to compare your article with thousands of other articles. Did they really buy those academic articles? Is it really not illegal for them to buy articles and use them for commercial purposes? Would they really not save the articles you uploaded?”
